Northern Savings Invests on 3rd Avenue
The residents of Prince Rupert are about to see the first signs of change on 3rd Avenue, as Northern Savings Credit Union purchases the old DQ Building on the corner of McBride & 3rd Avenue and makes plans to dismantle it.
This building has stood vacant for years as a reminder of Prince Rupert's difficult economic past, and now its removal will signal the start of an exciting new period of redevelopment and revitalization. Redesign Rupert is committed to bringing life back to 3rd Avenue, and with the support of partners such as Northern Savings, we are seeing the first signs of real change.
Northern Savings’ interim CEO shared the news in a press release today, stating, “Northern Savings is committed to strengthening and growing our Northern communities. In its current state, the empty structure is not enhancing the viability of Prince Rupert’s downtown area. This purchase provides an opportunity for the Credit Union to work with the City of Prince Rupert’s Redesign Rupert and to contribute to the enrichment and development of Prince Rupert’s city core.” said Bill Snell, Northern Savings’ Interim President & CEO.
In regards to the purchase, Mayor Lee Brain stated, “I'm so excited to see Redesign Rupert moving into action by working with partners to revitalize our community. Northern Savings Credit Union has been a stable and reliable partner for Prince Rupert for many years, and we welcome this commitment to improving the downtown core. The DQ building is the first thing you see when coming into town. This change in hands signals a new beginning and opportunity for our community."
